Filter-grade ceramic is made from fine mineral particles fired into a hard, porous body. The gaps between those fused particles form a winding network of pores rated at 1 micron, one millionth of a meter. Water can push through; particles larger than the pores cannot, so they collect on the outer surface and in the outermost layer of the ceramic.

Surface filtration you can clean

Because the ceramic is rigid, what it catches builds up mostly on the outside instead of loading deep into the media the way a spun or pleated cartridge does. Wiping that surface removes the buildup and brings back the flow, which is why one ceramic cartridge can do the work of several disposable sediment filters.

What 1 micron catches

Silt, clay, rust and other fine particles, the thin mineral fibers called asbestos that can come from aging asbestos-cement water mains, and, because of their size, protozoan cysts and many bacteria. It is a physical filter, not a treatment for unsafe water, and viruses are small enough to pass through. It also does not adsorb chemicals the way carbon does, so chlorine, VOCs, lead and fluoride pass through. Pair it with a SMART or carbon stage for those, and with UV or reverse osmosis if your water may be microbiologically unsafe.

What you are looking at

An off-white, rigid ceramic filter element, 2-7/8" across and 9-3/4" long, closed at each end by a black end cap with a gasket that seals in the housing. The pleated cellulose media wraps a rigid polypropylene core, polyethylene netting holds the pleats in place, and both ends are sealed in vinyl plastisol so water cannot bypass the media. As the cartridge works, the pleats darken with what they catch, a visible record of what stayed out of your system.

How a pleated sediment filter works

Mechanical filtration by size

Sediment filtration is straining. Water passes through the cellulose media and particles larger than its 5-micron rating are trapped. Nothing is added to the water and nothing chemical happens; the cartridge simply holds back what is too big to pass.

Why pleats beat a plain wrap

Folding the media into pleats packs far more filter surface into the same cartridge. More surface means water moves through the media more slowly at any given point, which keeps the pressure drop low and spreads the dirt over a larger area. The result is strong flow and a long run before the cartridge loads up.

Surface loading you can see

Pleated media catches most dirt on its outer face, where you can see it. That makes it easy to judge how hard your water is working the filter and to adjust your change schedule if your sediment load is heavy.

Why a pre-filter pays for itself

Carbon, SMART media and RO membranes are built to treat chemistry, not to strain mud. Water flows through the media and particles that are too large to pass are held back, on the surface and through the depth of the media. Nothing is added to the water and nothing dissolved is taken out. The job is purely physical: keep suspended particles out of everything that follows.

Why sediment always goes first

Every finer stage in a water system is easier to foul than it is to replace. Silt that coats carbon granules hides the pore surface the carbon needs for adsorption. Fine particles that reach an ultrafiltration or reverse osmosis membrane settle on it and cut production. A sediment stage at the front takes that load so the carbon, UF and RO stages behind it can spend their capacity on the contaminants they were chosen to treat.

Dirt-holding capacity and flow

As the cartridge works, captured particles build up in the media. That is the cartridge doing its job, and it is also how it tells you when it is done: flow and pressure from the tap, dispenser or ice maker drop as the media fills. A heavy sediment load fills it sooner; clean city water lets it run longer.

Why fine particles matter on an appliance line

Refrigerator dispensers, ice makers and cooler valves have small passages and moving seals.
