Description

Nitrate (NO3) comes into water supplies through the nitrogen cycle rather than via dissolved minerals. It is one of the major ions in natural waters. Most nitrate in drinking water is the result of contamination of groundwater supplies by septic systems, feedlots, and agricultural fertilizers. Nitrate is reduced to nitrite in the body. These cartridges contain a special nitrate-selective resin. Nitrate reduction is 90% to 95% and breakthrough is not affected by sulfate levels.

Important Note: The cartridge(s) in this system require manual salinity regeneration. The media must be recharged in order to maintain optimum performance. If the media is not regenerated, then the media will exhaust and result in a permeate of 0. The cycle of regeneration will vary based on the influent level of contaminants. The regeneration process should be done every 20 to 30 days depending on level of nitrate.

The process of regeneration involves dissolving salt in water (2-3 cups of salt for every 3-4 cups of water) stir well and soak (you may want to use something to hold the cartridge down) the cartridge for 1-2 hours, then soak the cartridge in tap water for an additional 1-2 hours, rinse with the tap running tap water and reinstall the cartridge. Regeneration is not required before its first use even if the cartridge has been unopened for a period of time.

Solved 10mg/l nitrate problem

Purchased property in 1987; well water had 2.4mg/l nitrate. Water tested in 2020 because of fish tank problems; nitrate level increased to 10mg/l over 30 years. The EPA maximum level for nitrates is 10mg/l. After significant researching I purchased a 4.5"x20" nitrate filter and installed the filter housing in the basement. I picked Crystal Quest because the rated flow capacity of the filters was much higher than other brands. I ran new CPVC piping from the filter housing to the refrigerator and kitchen sink. Originally I was going to add a filtered water faucet to the kitchen sink but decided to just connect it to the cold water side of the regular faucet. The flow rate of the kitchen faucet is well below the max 6 GPM rate for the filter which provided excellent contact time. Initial tests of the water after flushing matched the chart color for 0 nitrates. At my contamination level the cartridge should last for a year with a daily use of 5 gallons. I also installed a GAC filter after the nitrate filter. The taste of the water from the refrigerator has significantly improved.
