What the Color Is Actually Telling You
You turned on the tap and something brown came out. Before you do anything else, here is the headline: color is an aesthetic signal, not a safety test. It doesn't prove your water is dangerous, and clear water doesn't prove your water is safe.
That framing comes straight from how the rules are written. The EPA's standards for the things that tint water, iron at 0.3 mg/L, manganese at 0.05 mg/L, and color itself at 15 color units, are secondary standards: non-enforceable guidelines for taste, odor and appearance rather than health limits. The agency notes that most people find color objectionable above 15 color units, which is really a statement about complaints, not about risk.
Color tells you where the problem is, not how dangerous it is. Brown at every tap points outside your walls, usually hydrant flushing or a main break. Brown at one tap points at that branch's plumbing. Brown only in the hot points at your water heater. Work through those three questions first, because they're free and they narrow the cause in minutes.

Start With One Question: One Tap, or Every Tap?
This single question splits the whole diagnosis, and it costs you nothing.
Walk the house and open the cold side at the kitchen, a bathroom, and if you have one, an outside spigot or laundry tap. Give each one a minute.
If every tap runs discolored, the problem arrived from outside your walls. On city water that usually means the utility is flushing hydrants, repairing a main, or something knocked loose the fine sediment that settles inside distribution pipes between events. None of that is your plumbing, and none of it is fixed by anything you buy today.
One exception is worth knowing about. If your home is fed by a lead service line, EPA advises watching for nearby construction or maintenance work that could disturb it, because ground tremors from that work can suddenly release more lead. That's the one case where a supply disturbance carries information beyond appearance, so if you know or suspect you have a lead line, call your utility rather than waiting it out. If one tap runs discolored while the others stay clear, the problem lives on that branch: an old galvanized run corroding from the inside, or the fixture itself. Older homes with original steel pipe do this on the least used taps first, because water sitting still is water that has time to react.
If one tap still runs cloudy after the others clear, unscrew its aerator and rinse the screen. A sediment event leaves debris there, and a clogged screen keeps a single tap looking bad after the line behind it is fine.
Brown or Orange Water: Iron and Line Rust
Brown and orange are the iron family, and iron gets in two very different ways. On a well, it comes dissolved out of the ground. On city water, it usually comes from the pipes: the mains, or your own.
Among the effects EPA lists for iron above 0.3 mg/L are two that behave very differently: rusty color and sediment. Those are two different problems with two different fixes.
The Glass Test: Dissolved Iron, or Already Rusted?
Here's a test you can run right now with a drinking glass. Fill it from the cold tap and set it on the counter. Then look at it after fifteen minutes and again after an hour.
- Clear when poured, brown as it sits. That's dissolved iron, sometimes called ferrous. It was invisible underground where there wasn't any oxygen, and it's rusting in front of you now that there is. A plain sediment cartridge won't catch it, because when the water hits that cartridge the iron isn't a particle yet.
- Brown when poured, and it settles into a layer. That iron already oxidized, upstream. It's a particle now, so a filter can physically catch it.
- Brown when poured and it never settles. That's usually very fine suspended material, and it points back at the distribution line or a stirred up well.
That one observation changes the entire treatment route, which is why it's worth the hour before you buy anything.
One caveat on timing. How fast dissolved iron rusts depends on the water's pH, and acidic water can take several hours rather than one. If the glass hasn't changed after an hour, leave it overnight before you rule dissolved iron out.
What Changes About the Fix
Dissolved iron has to be oxidized before it can be filtered, so the system does the rusting on purpose, in a controlled place, and then strains out what it just made. Already rusted iron skips that step and needs filtration sized to the particle load. Get this backwards and you'll buy a filter that clogs in weeks while the water keeps coming through brown.

Yellow or Tea Colored Water
Yellow that looks like weak tea, and stays clear rather than cloudy, usually isn't iron at all. It's tannins: natural organics leached from decaying leaves and peat. Shallow wells and surface influenced sources see it most, and it often gets worse after heavy rain.
Tannins are a nuisance rather than a hazard, but they're stubborn. They pass straight through a sediment filter and they can stain laundry. Black or Gray: Manganese
Manganese is iron's quieter neighbor. EPA's secondary standard sits at 0.05 mg/L, far lower than iron's, and among the effects it lists are black to brown color, black staining and a bitter metallic taste.
In practice people notice manganese as dark specks in an ice cube, a gray film in the toilet tank, or black streaks in the dishwasher. It shows at much smaller concentrations than iron does, so a level too low to sound alarming can still stain everything. Discolored Hot Water Only
If the cold side runs clear at every tap and only the hot is rusty, stop thinking about your water supply. Your water heater is the suspect.
Tanks carry a sacrificial anode rod that corrodes so the tank doesn't. When that rod is spent, the tank itself starts giving up iron, and sediment that's accumulated at the bottom gets stirred with every heating cycle. Both show up as rusty hot water and often as a smell.
This is a plumbing repair, not a filtration project. No whole house filter installed on the incoming line will fix rust that's being generated downstream of it, inside the tank.
Brown Water in the Toilet Tank Only
A tank that stains while every faucet runs clear is telling you about the tank, not the supply. Water sits still in there for hours, which gives deposits time to form on the walls and on the fill valve.
Two different things look similar. Hard reddish deposits that wipe off as grit are rust, usually from the fill valve or the tank hardware, and replacing the corroded part ends it. A soft orange or reddish slime that keeps coming back after you scrub is usually iron bacteria, which is common on wells. It's a nuisance organism rather than a health hazard, but it doesn't respond to filter changes, and clearing it means shock disinfecting the well and the plumbing rather than buying a cartridge.
Is Discolored Water Safe to Drink?
The color alone doesn't tell you.
What's reasonable: at the levels that tint water, iron and tannins are aesthetic problems. They stain, they taste metallic, they're unpleasant. Manganese is the exception worth knowing about. It stains from 0.05 mg/L, which is only an appearance guideline, but EPA also publishes a non-enforceable health advisory for manganese at 0.3 mg/L over a lifetime, and it advises using that same 0.3 mg/L figure for infants younger than six months even over a short stretch. Staining alone doesn't tell you which side of that number you're on, which is the practical reason to test rather than eyeball it, especially on a well and especially if you mix formula. At the same time, the contaminants that do drive those limits are mostly invisible. Lead doesn't change the color of water, which is exactly why lead in drinking water is tested for rather than looked at.
So treat the discoloration as information about your plumbing and your supply, not as a verdict on either.
None of that tells you what to do about tonight, so here's the default. Until it runs clear, don't drink it and don't cook with it, and use bottled or stored water for drinking, ice, formula and brushing teeth. Flushing toilets, and in most cases washing hands, are fine. That isn't a verdict on your water. It's what you do when you don't have an answer yet and the answer is cheap to wait for.
Two situations do change the calculus and deserve a faster response:
- Discoloration alongside a boil water notice or a known main break. Follow the advisory, not the color. If authorities advise boiling, EPA's emergency guidance is to let cloudy water settle, filter it through a clean cloth or coffee filter, then bring it to a rolling boil for at least one minute, or three minutes above 5,000 feet. - Discoloration that arrives with a taste, smell or symptom change nobody can explain. That's the point to stop reasoning from appearance and get a test.
What to Do in the Next Hour
- Check every tap, cold side and hot side. You're answering two questions: everywhere or one place, and cold too or hot only.
- Ask one neighbor. If their water is brown too, it came from outside your walls and nothing in your house needs fixing. This is the fastest version of the check above.
- Call your utility if you're on city water. Ask directly whether there's hydrant flushing or main work nearby. Utilities field this call constantly and will usually tell you immediately.
- Look up your annual water quality report. Community water systems have to send customers a Consumer Confidence Report each year by July 1, and it lists what's actually been detected in your supply. Private wells aren't covered by that requirement, so well owners test on their own.
- Run the cold tap 5 to 10 minutes if the discoloration seems isolated or followed a known disturbance. Sediment that got stirred usually clears.
- Do the glass test while you wait, and note what you saw.
- Skip the laundry. Iron and manganese set stains in fabric, and chlorine bleach makes iron stains permanent rather than removing them. Wait until it clears.
- Hold off on the dishwasher too, and go easy on hot water. Drawing hot water pulls whatever is in the line into your water heater tank, where it settles and comes back later.

When Treatment Is the Right Answer
Treatment makes sense when the cause is yours and recurring: a well with iron, manganese or tannins, or a home where discoloration returns after every supply disturbance. It doesn't make sense as a response to a one off hydrant flush.
Because these constituents stain fixtures and laundry throughout the house, the place to treat them is where the water enters, not at the kitchen sink. Why did my water turn brown right after the utility finished working on the street?
Work on a main or a hydrant changes the direction and speed of flow, which scours material that had settled on the pipe wall. It usually clears on its own once the line resettles. If it keeps returning at the same tap after every event, that points at your own service line rather than the main.
How long should I run the tap before giving up?
Five to ten minutes on the cold side. If a stirred up line or a rarely used fixture is the cause, it generally clears in that window. If it doesn't, running it longer rarely helps, and it's time to call the utility or a plumber depending on whether one tap or all of them are affected.
