Each kit screens for radon read below to learn more.

What is Radon and why it might be a concern?

Radon is a naturally occurring gas with no color, odor, or taste. It forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. While radon is most commonly known as an indoor air concern, it can also dissolve into groundwater—especially private wells.

When household water containing radon is used for activities like showering, cooking, or washing dishes, some of the gas is released into the air, while smaller amounts may remain in the water itself. Over time, this release can contribute to the overall radon levels inside your home.

Why it matters: Breathing air that contains elevated levels of radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States (after smoking), according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Unlike many contaminants, radon cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste, which makes testing the only reliable way to know your exposure.

Testing ensures your water is safe before problems arise. Our kits include simple, step-by-step instructions for easy use at home.

Radon Water Test Instructions

Sampling Instructions - Please Read Before Starting

Step 1

The water radon test kit consists of a sample bottle, and a sample information sheet, which is on the reverse of this instruction form, and a pre-addressed mailing label.

Step 2

Samples must be shipped the same day they are collected via guaranteed next day delivery and must be collected after 1:00 p.m. EST to minimize time in transit. Do not collect and/ or ship your samples on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or the day before a National Holiday.

The bottle should be filled with water from a tap connected to the supply being tested. Remove any aerators or sprinkler heads from the tap outlet. Water, which has been sitting in pipes and well storage tanks, can have a significantly lower radon gas content than the water in the well. Before filling the bottle, the water should be left running for at least ten minutes to empty the storage tank, thereby insuring that fresh water is collected

Open the tap and fill the bottle gently, avoiding agitation as much as possible. Agitating the water speeds the release of radon gas. Fill the bottle completely full to overflowing, so that there is no air left in the top (no "head space"). Screw the cap on tightly. Check to make sure that there is no air or air bubbles in the bottle.

If there is any air in the sample bottle then it should be emptied and flushed out and a fresh sample collected. Care should be taken to avoid any contamination of the sample with dirt, or anything other than fresh tap water.

Step 3A

Complete the enclosed lab form, making sure to indicate the collection date and time you sampled, type of water, and sample identification (e.g. kitchen sink, well head, etc.) Return the blue ice pack to the kit and place the kit back in the cardboard box with the completed lab form.

Step 3B

Make arrangements to ship the kit by guaranteed next day delivery [or drop the kit off at our laboratory within 24 hours of collection, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm] to the following address:

National Testing Laboratories
556 South Mansfield Street
Ypsilanti, MI 48197

If we do not receive your sample within 24 hours of sample collection or if you have not provided the date and time of collection, the bacteria results will be marked INVALID!
