The footprint is real
An atmospheric tank in the range Crystal Quest specifies for whole house service, roughly 165 to 500 gallons depending on household demand, is not a closet item. Add the membrane skid and the repressurization pump and you need a dedicated mechanical area, a garage bay, or a basement corner. Homes that cannot give up that space are disqualified on geometry alone, before budget ever comes up.
It needs electricity, and it adds a mechanical failure point
A whole house carbon filter is passive. Water pressure does the work and there is nothing to plug in. Whole house RO runs pumps. That means an electrical circuit, pump maintenance, and a system that stops delivering water the way you expect if a pump or a float switch fails.

What Whole House RO Does Not Solve
Reverse osmosis is not a universal answer, and a few gaps matter for whole-home use:
- Dissolved gases including carbon dioxide and radon pass through the membrane. Radon is handled with granular activated carbon tiers, not RO.
- Chlorine is removed by the carbon pre-filter, not by the membrane. The membrane needs protecting from it.
- Bacteria should not be managed by a membrane alone on a biologically unsafe supply. UV disinfection is the tool for that job.
- Hardness is better addressed by softening or anti-scale media ahead of the membrane than by asking the membrane to absorb the whole load.

Whole house RO is probably the wrong tool if
- Your complaint is chlorine taste or smell. A whole house carbon filter solves that for far less money and no pumps.
- Your complaint is scale, spotting, or crusty fixtures. That's hardness, and a softener or anti-scale system addresses it directly.
- Your complaint is sediment, iron, or a rotten-egg odor. Those are sediment and oxidation problems, not membrane problems.
- What you actually care about is what you drink and cook with. An under-sink RO at the kitchen tap gives you the same purified water at the point where it matters.
- You have not tested your water yet. Buying the most aggressive treatment available before knowing what you're treating is the most expensive way to guess.
