Brackish water or briny water is water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater. It may result from mixing of seawater with fresh water, as in estuaries, or it may occur in brackish fossil aquifers. The word comes from the Middle Dutch root "brak". Certain human activities can produce brackish water, in particular civil engineering projects such as dikes and the flooding of coastal marshland to produce brackish water pools for freshwater prawn farming. Brackish water is also the primary waste product of the salinity gradient power process. Because brackish water is hostile to the growth of most terrestrial plant species, without appropriate management it is damaging to the environment.

VIPER Series Industrial Reverse Osmosis Systems are engineered to treat demanding feed water conditions like low temperature or a high content of dissolved solids. Designed for robust applications requiring a high pressure pump (up to 400 psi) the Viper™ Industrial Series Reverse Osmosis Systems are ideally suited for brackish water with total dissolved solids (TDS) in the range of 5000 to 10,000 ppm.

The models of the Viper Industrial Series range in capacity from 20 to 125 gallons per minute (30,000 to 180,000 per day). Using high efficiency 8- inch reverse osmosis elements with 10% greater membrane surface area, Viper Industrial Series systems are able to significantly reduce the TDS in both municipal and well water sources while producing higher volumes of permeate. Low energy brackish membranes are available for cold temperature applications and high rejection brackish membranes are available for high TDS applications.

The Viper Industrial Series models feature a pre-programmed computer controller, motorized feed valve, TDS probes, and panel-mounted pressure and flow instrumentation. The larger models include digital indication flow and VFD motor control. Stainless steel components are used for the vertical multistage pump, cartridge filter housing, high pressure piping and valves and the ports of the FPR pressure vessels. High pressure hose is employed for ease of maintenance.
