Sediment Filter Cartridges

A sediment filter cartridge is the first stage of most water filtration systems. It catches sand, silt, dirt, rust flakes and other loose particles before they reach the carbon, reverse osmosis or UV stages that follow, so those stages work better and last longer.

How to choose a sediment filter cartridge

  • Match the size to your housing. Standard sizes are 2-7/8" x 9-3/4" and 2-7/8" x 20" (often called 2.5 x 10 and 2.5 x 20) and 4-5/8" x 9-3/4" and 4-5/8" x 20" (often called 4.5 x 10 and 4.5 x 20). Inline cartridges come with JACO or quick-connect fittings.
  • Pleated cartridges have a large surface area, which balances flow with dirt-holding capacity. A common choice for whole house and well water.
  • Ceramic cartridges use a dense ceramic shell for fine particle filtration in drinking water systems.
  • Inline cartridges are self-contained with built-in fittings, for compact under sink and inline setups.

When to replace a sediment filter

Replace the cartridge when water pressure drops noticeably or the cartridge looks loaded with dirt. Water that carries more sediment, such as many private wells, needs more frequent changes.

These cartridges fit standard housings of the same size, including Crystal Quest systems.
