Crystal Quest Sulfate Reducing Bacteria Test
Crystal Quest has partnered with National Testing Laboratories, a trusted leader in water analysis, to provide accurate testing for drinking water in homes and buildings
Sulfate reducing bacteria feed on sulfur-based compounds such as sulfate, sulfite, elemental sulfur, and thiosulfate. As they metabolize these compounds, they produce hydrogen sulfide—a gas responsible for the characteristic “rotten egg” odor. Other signs of their presence include blackened water or a dark slime buildup, often seen in toilet tanks. This test helps confirm whether these bacteria are affecting your water.
Testing is simple and convenient: just collect your sample and return it for analysis.

Step 1
After the blue ice pack has been in your freezer for at least 8 hours, you can collect your water sample from an appropriate water faucet or spigot. If the spout has a strainer or aerator, remove it prior to sampling
Step 2
Samples must be shipped the same day they are collected via guaranteed next day delivery and must be collected after 1:00 p.m. EST to minimize time in transit. Do not collect and/ or ship your samples on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or the day before a National Holiday.
Fill all of the bottles as shown in the picture to the right & do not rinse any bottles.
Return the frozen blue gel ice pack(s) to the cooler. You will receive only one sampling bottle, and the color of the cap will be determined by the test ordered. Remove any aerators or strainers from the spigot and disinfect the spigot using alcohol or flame (if metal). If you suspect methane in your water do not use flame.
Remove the bottle cap and fill the bottle to the fill line just below the threads. Replace the cap securely. Return your filled bottle to the bubble bag, remove paper strip from the bubble bag back to reveal the adhesive and seal the bubble bag closed. Return the sealed bubble bag to the cooler.
Step 3A
Complete the enclosed lab form, making sure to indicate the collection date and time you sampled, type of water, and sample identification (e.g. kitchen sink, well head, etc.) Return the blue ice pack to the kit and place the kit back in the cardboard box with the completed lab form.
Step 3B
Make arrangements to ship the kit by guaranteed next day delivery [or drop the kit off at our laboratory within 24 hours of collection, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm] to the following address:
National Testing Laboratories
556 South Mansfield Street
Ypsilanti, MI 48197
If we do not receive your sample within 24 hours of sample collection or if you have not provided the date and time of collection, the bacteria results will be marked INVALID!
