A pre-filter plus a working filter, protecting the whole house
The Whole House System (2 Stages) puts two full-size 5 inch by 20 inch cartridge housings on your main water line. Stage 1 is your pre-filter: it catches sediment or handles chlorine taste and odor so the second cartridge does not have to. Stage 2 is your working filter: choose the cartridge that targets the main problem in your water. The pre-filter extends the life of the second stage, which is where two-stage systems earn their keep.
Crystal Quest has engineered and manufactured its own water filtration systems in the USA since 1994, under an ISO 9001 certified quality management system, using NSF/ANSI certified components.
Stage 1: choose your pre-filter
- Sediment: depth-style cartridge that traps dirt, silt, sand, and rust before they reach the second stage. The right choice for most homes and all well water.
- Carbon Block: solid carbon cartridge that knocks down chlorine taste and odor, VOCs, and pesticides up front. The right choice on low-sediment city water when the second stage is a specialty cartridge.
Stage 2: choose your working filter
- Carbon Block: chlorine taste and odor, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents.
- Sediment: doubled sediment capacity for very dirty supplies.
- SMART: broad-spectrum multimedia blend of two types of coconut shell granular activated carbon (including catalytic), oxidation-reduction alloy media, anion exchange resin, and ceramic and tourmaline balls. Reduces chlorine and chloramine, heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides, and pharmaceutical byproducts while supporting a more alkaline pH.
- KDF + GAC: oxidation-reduction media plus granular activated carbon for chlorine, water-soluble heavy metals, and hydrogen sulfide taste and odor.
- Iron & Manganese: reduces dissolved iron and manganese, the source of orange and black staining and metallic taste.
- Lead: lead-selective media with carbon.
- Arsenic: arsenic-selective adsorption media.
- Fluoride: fluoride-selective adsorption media.
- Alkalizing: remineralizing media that raises pH toward alkaline and improves taste.
Popular pairings
- City water, better everything: Sediment then Carbon Block, or Carbon Block then SMART.
- Well water with staining: Sediment then Iron & Manganese.
- Specific contaminant on a test report: Sediment then Lead, Arsenic, or Fluoride.
What is included
- Two full-size 5 inch by 20 inch filter housings on a shared bracket
- Both selected cartridges, installed
- Optional powder-coated steel floor stand (select With System Stand)
Frequently asked questions
Why not just buy the single stage?
A dedicated pre-filter keeps particulate and chlorine off your working cartridge, so the expensive media lasts longer and keeps working at full strength. If your water has more than one problem, two stages solve both at once.
Do both cartridges change at the same time?
Not usually. Pre-filters typically change every 6 to 12 months, working cartridges every 12 to 24 months depending on media and usage.
Does it need electricity or a drain?
No. Cartridge system: no electricity, no backwashing, no drain line.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. Every option fits the same full-size housings, so you can change either stage at any cartridge swap.
